In September 2023, this young puma, approximately 1.5 years old, was rescued from a chicken coop by the SAG of San Felipe and transferred to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of the Safari Park in Rancagua, where they do not have an enclosure suitable for a puma, which prevented an appropriate rehabilitation evaluation, so he was referred to the Refugio.
During our evaluation, we showed that he came from illegal captivity.
How do we know?
- Habituation to human beings: He gets too close to people in search of food, generally without fear.
- Severe nutritional deficiencies: mobility problems were observed and after performing X-ray examinations, a deformation of his femur was confirmed in addition to heart problems. This is caused by long-term poor nutrition. Eco was probably poorly fed since he was a puppy with cat food or only the muscle of the meat (without bone), causing severe decalcification.
- Probable confinement in a small space: in addition to assumptions such as the murder of his mother, it is presumed that he was kept in a very small enclosure, where he had very little mobility, because when he arrived he would trip over himself.
For these and other reasons, we demonstrate illegal possession. With this background, our Foundation has made a complaint, which is ongoing at this time.
Therefore Eco is not releasable and has stayed to live in the Refugio. Today he is a partner of Maqui and Huilo, who are very happy to have a new member in their family.
